Caesar in Gaul – Total War: ROME II

Caesar in Gaul is a standalone campaign pack for Total War: ROME II that focuses on Julius Caesar’s war of expansion against the Gaulish tribes. Players can choose from four playable factions in this conflict:

• Gallic Arverni
• Germanic Suebi
• Belgic Nervii
• Rome

This campaign is inspired by Caesar’s Commentarii de bello Gallico (Commentaries on the Gallic War). Offering a tighter scope in terms of time and geography than ROME II (58-51 BC), the Caesar in Gaul Campaign Map presents an expanded, more detailed vision of Gaul and the south coast of Britannia.

Key Features

• New Campaign Map: The campaign map is an enhanced representation of Gaul, allowing players to expand across 18 provinces rich in resources, new settlements, and provincial capitals.
• Greater Focus on Characters: Many factions employ historical generals and statesmen (e.g., Rome fields Gaius Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, and others). Each of the four playable factions has a faction leader who acts as the player’s avatar during the campaign.
• 24 Turns per Year: Each turn represents two weeks rather than a year, reflecting the considerably shorter time-span of 58-51 BC. Seasons return with unpredictable gameplay effects varying from province to province.
• Compact, Focused Multiplayer Campaign: For generals seeking a rapid multiplayer experience, Caesar in Gaul offers tighter, more focused co-op or competitive 2-player campaigns due to its geographic scope and 48 opposing factions.
• New Mid-Game Challenge Mechanics: Players will face new challenges as a replacement for the Civil Wars of ROME II. As a Gallic tribe, players will encounter heavy Roman intervention, while as Rome, they will face rebellions and alliances formed by the Gallic tribes.
• New Historical Battle: The Battle of Alesia is added as a playable historical battle, marking a turning point in Caesar’s Gallic War. Players must maintain the siege of Vercingetorix’s stronghold while managing attacks from both a relief army and within the fort itself.

New Playable Factions in Total War: ROME II

In addition to the factions playable within the new campaign, Caesar in Gaul introduces three new playable factions to the main game:

• Nervii (barbarian, Belgic): The most fierce and powerful of the Belgic tribes, the Nervii are a mix of Celtic and Germanic heritage, allowing for unique army compositions.
• Boii (barbarian, Gallic): One of the largest Gallic tribes, the Boii occupied Cisalpine-Gaul, Pannonia, Bohemia, and Transalpine Gaul. Their numbers make them a formidable force, though they are geographically isolated.
• Galatians (barbarian, Anatolia): The Gauls of the East, the Galatians migrated to Asia Minor, presenting unique gameplay challenges as they navigate hostile Hellenic territories.
